Review of Cyrus (2010) by Paul W — 18 Feb 2011
The Duplass Bros. have created a strange hybrid of comedy drama that paints its very human subjects with a remarkable lack of irony. Whereas the Apatow crew would have targeted the idiosyncrasies and dysfunctions of its cast of obsessives and losers, Reilly and co.
play their roles with warmth and poignancy and thwart the derision normally reserved for these types of characters. There aren't many belly laughs to be had but Cyrus takes us in directions usually left unexplored and is well worth a look.
