Review of Cyrus (2010) by Raynormanbateman . — 25 Feb 2011

First off, don't be fooled into thinking this is a laugh-out-loud slacker comedy in the style of the Judd Apatow or Vaughn/Wilson/Ferrell crowd. This is more of a (to quote a fellow reviewer) 'mumblecore' movie - a hand-held, semi-improvised character piece from directors Mark & Jay Duplass which has more in common with the 'painfully funny' comedy of say, 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

It's not without flaws and sometimes seems unable to settle on a style, but in the main it remains nicely restrained, the three leads are excellent (Marisa Tomei is having something of a renaissance & has never looked more gorgeous) and there are some very funny moments, particulary the 'awkward' party scene at the beginning & Jonah Hill gives very good 'creepy son'.
