Review of Cyrus (2010) by Jayden C — 16 Mar 2011
***CONTAINS SPOILERS**** What a wierd film. Refreshingly wierd. I've always been a fan of Jonah Hill so I had to see this and was pleasantly surprised. This is similar to Seth Rogan's role in the underrated Observe and Report.
It's not a laugh out loud comedy that is completely zany and lame like 99% of those out there. Although, like most decent comedies, this mixes in a nice bit of drama. The acting is just solid in this film.
I've realised John C Reilly is actually a decent actor and my impressions of him were skewed by his appearances in Will Ferrell movies (Will Ferrell sucks). Jonah is the stand out here though, taking creepy to a whole new, incestuous level.
It's developed great and has a bitter sweet ending, I think. It leaves it ambigious with a flutter of hope between Molly and John and Cyrus going to get John's stuff. The pessimist in me says, though, that Cyrus has gone to hang himself in the shed.
Winning the war forever. >_> This movie makes you think about loving after being alone for so long, no character in the film is completely flawless (John should stop bugging his ex-wife for example) and that's what makes it a great, wierd little film.
Is love worth it? Of course it isn't but we all still try anyway.
