Review of Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) by Cameron L — 09 Feb 2009
Simply wonderful. Elegant and beautiful, immensely charming and deeply affecting, a whimsical, disarming, brutally honest portrayal of the sweet agony of love. The fight scenes might fall too far short of their modern counterparts (particularly the war scene, less so the swordfights) to really be considered wild or exciting - but they're certainly fun, and to find the like in such an intelligent and heartfelt piece is a surprising, welcome addition. The elements of humour, on the other hand, haven't dated at all, and are not only wonderfully interwoven, but also genuinely, laugh-out-loud hilarious. Depardieu is absolutely flawless.
For some I'm sure it'll outstay it's welcome, and the ending will feel kitsch, but for me (and, I'd be bold enough to wager, anyone willing to invest a bit of emotion into the experience) it's exquisite.
