Review of Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) by Rebecca P — 15 Mar 2010
I first saw this movie in high school French class. The movie is in French with English subtitles. Cyrano loves his cousin his whole life, but is never able to tell her. Christian falls in love with her too, but does not have Cyrano's use of words and poetry.
Cyrano agrees to write to her for Christian. His passionate letters are sent every day despite a war separating them. When Christian is killed, Cyrano has to stop writing to her, but still loves her until death.
She goes into a convent and mourns her husband, whom she falsely believes wrote the letters. Cyrano's enemies try to kill him. At the end Cyrano recites the last letter he wrote to her professing his love in the dark.
At the end she knows it was him all along, but he dies. Gerard Depardieu gives a performance that can never be repeated by today's actors.
