Review of Cutthroat Island (1995) by Jayakrishnan R — 17 Jan 2015
By far the best actress in this movie is Shayna the Monkey, who plays King Charles (the captain's pet monkey). She is quite convincing as a pet monkey, although how she gets from one place to another during the non-stop incoherent action is unclear.
The other actors are far less convincing in their roles, such as they are. If you like lots and lots of explosions that are entirely wrong for the period, and inconsistent, and only do real damage when the plot demands it, you might like this movie.
Unfortunately the least convincing character is the star, Greer Davis, who looks like a TV character from any contemporary show throughout, rather than a 17th century person. The fight scenes are nearly constant but never remotely believable.
All that might not have mattered if the main characters displayed any original character, or any humor, or were likeable. No luck on any count. It's easy to see why this movie was such a flop.
