Review of Curse of Chucky (2013) by Orlando O — 07 Nov 2013
Curse of Chucky does go back to its horror roots unlike its previous sequel Seed of Chucky. It may be an improvement from Seed of Chucky but it still lacks any real scares that could have made it a fun horror movie.
Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) arrives in the mail to a family home. Paraplegic Nica (Fiona Dourif) and her mother Sarah open the package. Soon after an accident occurs with Sarah. Nica's sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives with husband Ian (Brennan Elliot), daughter Alice (Summer Howell) and a live in nanny Jill (Maitland McConnell.) Soon, Chucky stalks the rest of the family.
The plot was a typical horror cliché story. But it does try to reconnect with the original movie by showing Charles Lee Ray and his relations to the family before he transfer his soul into the doll.
The movie may have those creepy scare atmospheres but it never really delivers since all the shocks were easy to see coming. At least, it tries to take the serious approach on how the series originally started out to be in the franchise. Joseph LoDuca music score does feel like it was going for that Halloween theme music. But it semi worked in having the creepy tone of the movie.
Fiona Dourif, Danielle Bisutti, Brennan Elliot, and Maitland McConnell were all terrible with their performances. The acting was pretty bad enough, and not as believable. Brad Dourif still provides a good chilling voice as Chucky.
Don Mancini may have redeemed the Chucky series with this installment. But it still falls short with the tedious performances, and a cliché horror driven movie.
