Review of Cube (1998) by Samuel G — 23 May 2010
I woke up this morning and found myself in a strangely lit room, with doors in all the walls and ceiling and floor. I opened the doors and found other rooms, some with deadly traps, some with strangely lit people in them.
I talked to the people, and what a bunch of loonies they turned out to be!
Was it a dream, or the plot of this movie?
Or was it a normal day of my life, just like any other day?
I think this movie is indeed an allegorical consideration of certain aspects of life, particularly social and political aspects. We're all stuck in some gargantuan maze, trying desperately to figure out a way through. Strangers confront us at every turn. We must find ways to work with them, no matter how crazy their ideas may be.
Life is fragile, and fatal devices lie all around us, waiting to trap the unwary.
In the movie, it's the mentally handicapped character who succeeds in the end. Clearly this is intended to explain the U.S. Presidential elections of the last half-century or so.
Now you know.
