Review of Cube (1998) by Genesis L — 13 Jan 2014
Verdict: 4.85 Stars/ 5 Stars.
I am half-hearted in giving this a perfect score, 4.9 or a 4.8. I know that the movie lacks something, but it seems perfect to me. Being what it is, I think has gone beyond the limits of what it can do. Yes, this is a "concept film" for me- a cool concept that is decided to become a story, and that concept is the sole foundation of the film itself. It's just like how 'The Human Centipede' was made but this film has made the concept a very strong and excellent one. Simplicity has once more made these low budget movies utterly beautiful and it has successfully contained its large-scale ambition into this claustrophobic scale, giving us the best of gore it could give, the best of acting and the best of its message. This movie is admittedly senseless yet ironically its gets you thinking throughout- overlooking the greatness of human stupidity that it philosophically conveys. Subtle, straightforward, and sharp, it's one of the best and unique movies of all time.
