Review of Cuban Fury (2014) by Nathan M — 18 Aug 2014
A typical romantic comedy that is elevated by the presence of Frost, O'Dowd, and Jones. The chemistry between Frost and O'Dowd is so good that you don't even notice how many times you've seen this story on screen. Except when they're not together, which is when the film really starts to devolve into typical romantic comedy beats that don't really work. I'm not even sure the script is very funny, I have to think there was a lot of improvisation on set, because when Frost or O'Dowd aren't the ones talking, I'm not laughing. Most of the characters are over the top, and feel like something out of an Adam Sandler comedy, a late Adam Sandler comedy.
I just appreciate that Frost was given a chance to do something outside of his frequent collaborators Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. He proves that he's a solid performer in his own right, and deserves more screen time. O'Dowd is hilariously sleazy, but also charming in his role. You like watching these two guys go back and forth with each other. Jones works as the cool love interest, who isn't swayed by O'Dowd's charms.
It might be too predictable to be great, but if you enjoy watching two great comedians go back and forth, you'll enjoy more than you don't with Cuban Fury.
