Review of Crying Freeman (1995) by Nicki R — 08 Jan 2009
This movie is beautiful. Its beautifully framed, the scenes are rich in colour and texture and the characters are all visually appealing and well-chosen for their roles.
Its one of those movies that you don't have to think too hard to enjoy but there are a few philosophical gems that you may find yourself thinking about for a little while afterward.
The dialogue is a bit stilted and even when they're speaking English it sounds like its been dubbed, but that dialogue style is conveyed throughout consistently and if you can accept that, you'll get on fine with it.
The film is shot in a manga-esque style, which I happen to like which also adds to its dubbed martial arts movie quality. The costumes and set pieces looked great and enhanced the visual experience.
Overall something really cool to watch when you've had a bad day at work.
The story is much like so many others. Boy meets girl and then it all goes horribly wrong (as things tend to do) and then there are bad guys, and other bad guys and the hero is a bad guy too.
I loved it when I first watched it, a very long time ago and I still think its a beautiful story, awesomely told. Pure fantasy entertainment.
