Review of Cry_Wolf (2005) by Nichole C — 13 Oct 2009
The trailers for this movie make it seem like a trashy slasher with FUN TIMES written on its ass. I guess marketing-wise they lived up to what the movie's theme is. Cry Wolf is a clever little thriller.
It constantly challenges you to think while manipulating you and presenting MANY red herrings... in other words, it lies to you a lot. The different approach appealed to me and I got into this one fast, asking myself the questions it presented while trying to figure out the whodunit.
It helped that the teens looked and acted like real teens and the actors portraying them did good all around. Julian Morris was convincing and credible as the lead. Lindy Booth is so damn cute and here she got more to play with than roles I've seen her in before.
She hit all the right notes and entracned me when she popped up. Jared Padalecki rocked again as the more laid back of the bunch. Sandra McCoy looked incredible in "undress" form and delivered an adequate performance.
Jon Bon Jovi ROCKED as the not-so-trustworthy teacher. The man is just cool, period. Jeff Wadlow kept the movie stylish with some neat shots and quick montages, but he never did it to the point of taking me out of the movie.
He also kept a very grounded feel at the same time. Good job on pulling both feats effectively! On the downside of this liar, I found the fact that kids in their late teens forming a club like this a bit far-fetched.
Do you remember starting a club to lie to your classmates at 17? I remember playing the "where to get drunk, high and laid" game more. But it drove the plot and over time, it didn't bug me.
Furthermore, I am kind of pissed at the movie for "lying" to me via the way it presented itself as a slasher. I craved a bit more suspense, bloodshed and action sequences. If it had more in the club, I would've gotten way more involved.
I still can't deny that I had a blast with this one. It sported amazing directing, good acting, a very well written script, a sense of maturity (in a movie involving teens no less), a quick pace and a smart outcome.
It wasn't as much in horror as I had hoped but it was well worth the trip. By the way, there is a Whoopi Goldberg cameo in which it turns out she's the killer. Be sure to watch for it ;).
