Review of Cry Freedom (1981) by Milly M — 10 Jun 2010
One of the best films I've ever seen. This film actually raised a lot of awareness for apartheid in South Africa. It is based on the true story of the white South African journalist, Donald Woods, and how he came to realise how wrong the political system was through his friendship with black activist, Stephen Biko (who was murdered in South African police custody).
Woods then becomes a 'banned' person by the government and decided to flee Africa with his family. Proof that film can be very important in political events, not just as entertainment. Kevin Kline is fantastic as a normal man who gets caught up in something much bigger and more sinister than he can fathom.
