Very politically incorrect even by the standards of the late 70's, this is a movie that could never be made now and was barely made then. Friedkin gets down into a gritty gay underworld where he doesn't pull any punches and lets us see into a world that doesn't exist anymore except in Lou Reed songs.

Pacino gives what has to be one of his last meek and subtle performances before just becoming the screamer we know him as now. The movie definitely plays as more of a slasher movie than a cop drama so it helps to have one of the best horror actors of the time, Joe Spinell, in a sizable and bizarre supporting role.

Definitely a strong movie, don't watch if you're squeamish about sex or violence.
