Review of Crows Zero (2007) by Jack G — 31 Aug 2009
A bunch of high school kids, instead of getting silly book-learning, are enrolled in a school where it's a caste system without teachers and it's just about punching and pounding and kicking the crap out of each other to ascend to the highest position.
.. that is, if they don't graduate first! It's more high-flying, funny, hard-kicking acting from Miike, putting another twist (as if it were possible) on the Yakuza movie. It's got a few problems, but mostly in excesses of images and with a subplot that could've been cut out.
Otherwise, original and exciting material from the wildman of Japan.
