Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Douglas D — 22 Feb 2010
No doubt, 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' is a great film, and it set off a slew of films (at least in the US market) that borrowed its beautiful stylistic fighting. Since I had seen 'Hero' before seeing this I found myself comparing the two frequently (whether justly or not). The fight sequences are wonderfully choreographed, the story is meaningful, and overall it's well accomplished.
For my money though, I have to recommend renting this (because it was pioneering and it is quite good) and then purchasing 'Hero.' I thought 'Hero' took all the great things about 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' and made them better. I think 'Hero' is more visually stunning, I think the story was more beautiful, and I think the scope feels much more epic; the action is phenomenal in both.
