Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Christopher S — 05 Feb 2012
Ang Lee should be known for this, not "Brokeback.".
*Should-Be 2000 Best Picture: There is no frigging way that Gladiator is a better film than this epic, epic martial arts drama. It's total fantasy.
02/06/12 - Looking back on it, this feels like an Oscar-Seeking wuxia film. The choreography is tight, but its beauty is interrupted by "flying"--needless wirework. It doesn't help that it's a romance, and we all love to "sap up" for a good love story. I still believe that it's better than Gladiator, but it's not the epic I once thought it was. I much prefer the older, if cheesier, wuxia of The One-Armed Swordsmen or The Five Deadly Venoms.
