Review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) by Ryan V — 26 Jun 2012

Like most Americans, this film was my first exposure to the lush martial arts epics that comprise the wuxia genre. The story, which concerns a spiritually troubled teenage aristocrat who is also a swordfighting prodigy, is magnificently shot by director Ang Lee.

Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh struggle to mentor the young girl as beautiful landscapes and thrilling fight scenes arrest the attention of the viewer. After I saw this film I was convinced that it was the Asian response to Lawrence of Arabia.

I'm still pretty sure that it very well could be.
