Review of Crossing Over (2009) by James R — 11 Oct 2009
4/5 - I found this to be an intriguing film with a lot of meat for the meager 110 min running time. It was laid out with a similar multi-plot perspective to 'Traffic', only with a focus on Immigration instead of Drug Trafficking. You've got your noble guys who struggle to do the right thing in the face of indifference by colleagues, your sleaze who uses his meager mid-level management position to take advantage of those seeking a better life, your naturalized American who knows the pain of some of the sacrifices you make in your search for citizenship giving someone a much-needed second chance...and you have a fair mix of success stories, failures and egregious injustices to spread the emotional weight around.
No one really shines in this (though Cliff Curtis comes very close) but what you have is a melange of story and character that, taken as a whole, emits its own eery, inescapable glow.
