Review of Cross of Iron (1977) by Terri H — 15 Feb 2009
Did I see the wrong version of this film? I had to sit through a crummy pan-and-scan version distributed by Hen's Tooth Video, and the whole time it felt like I was watching a home movie. Now I hear that there's a widescreen version out there; I'd very much like to get my hands on that version, because this one sucks.
Anyway, in regards to the film itself, Peckinpah does a solid job with what would be his only war epic. The battle sequences are bloody BRILLIANT, and James Coburn, Maximillian Schell, James Mason and David Warner all deliver.
Some would say that this is Peckinpah's last great film. I would have to disagree and reserve that title for "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia". Can this really be thought of as a "great" film? I'm not sure.
There's no doubt, however, that it comes close.
