Review of Cross of Iron (1977) by Monsieur R — 30 Sep 2010
THE best account of WWII from the other side, the German side of things. In the final year of the war, we get to see reality set in on the German troops.
Fantastic cinematography. The bodies go flying, the bullets let blood from the flesh. I have NEVER seen better battle scenes rendered in my movie going experience. NOT Saving Private Ryan, NOT The Longest Day, NOT Hamburger Hill, NOT even Patton.
James Cobern delivers an outstanding performance as a sergent in the German army who decides the fighting is just not worth the pricipals as dealt out by Der Fuhrer.
Maximillian Schell is the still stubborn Nazi who upholds the faith. He is outstanding as well as the captain who tries to lead the overwhelmed German troops.
This is the ONLY real attempt, especially in 1976, to see things from the other side.
A Sam Peckinpah masterpiece, as so many of his films were.
