Review of Cross of Iron (1977) by Jens T — 18 Dec 2010
After my opinion, the best war movie ever made and also one of my personal favorits. All from the big picture to the small details, such as all the dust, the soldiers dirty clothes and that one of the soldier is wearing a sovjet cap as a protest to the regime who send them to do their dirty work.
There is no heroism in this film, just the fight for survival, as in the animals order of nature. James Coburn is perfect for the role as the true rough surviver Sgt. Rolf Steiner. His eyes, his gray hair and his Deeply calm, yet authoritative voice.
And his enemy, the prussian aristocrat Capt. Stransky, and who else but the charismatic bulldog german named Maximillian Schell. The technical achievement in the Cross of Iron is spectacular, from begining to end.
The montages with world war II footage playing the german children song Hänschen klein is just in itself a movie. We seening german kids being brainwashed by the national socialist. The editing is also amazing, and the thrilling battle sequence, and the slow-motion scenes where soldairs is being hit and all the explotions.
The Perfect anti-war movie.
