Review of Cronos (1993) by Joe A — 15 Jan 2011
Guillermo del Toro's first feature is a disturbing and original horror about a device that can possibly grant immortality but, with strange and addictive side effects. Here the forming of del Toro's unique visual style and penchant for splashes of blood and violence can be seen, although, the tone of the film is a little uneven going from straight horror to darkly whimsical at times.
It's not enough to hurt the film but, does help illustrate his growth as a filmmaker from this point to his masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth. A must see for fans of his work. And, as usual, the Criterion Collection treatment of the film is a film geek feast.
