Review of Cronos (1993) by Eric R — 19 Jul 2011
Jesus, an old antique dealer in Mexico, maintains his small shop with his granddaughter Aurora. One of his pieces is a 16th century artifact built by an Alchemist, which unbeknown to Jesus, contains a device that will grant the user eternal life.
After unintentionally using the device, Jesus begins to notice that he has become more sensivtive to sunlight and has developed a taste for blood. Guillermo del Toro's first feature film Cronos is a unique spin on the classic vampire tale.
Guillermo del Toro looks at Jesus transformation into a vampire as a curse. This man does not want to live forever and for the most of the film doesn't have any idea what is going on. Like many of his films Guillermo uses a young child to give innocence and understanding to our characters plight.
Mixing macabre with arthouse sensibilities this was quite an audious start for Del Toro which showed early on the type of films he was interested in making. Oh, and Ron Pearlman is great in this as the greedy/mean nephew of an industrialist who is after the device.
