Review of Crimson Tide (1995) by John M — 24 Feb 2014
Another winner from Tony Scott. On brink of nuclear war with ze Russians, trouble arises on a US nuclear missile submarine. During a small skirmish with a Russian submarine, the US submarine loses its communications, the catch being that an emergency message was cut off mid-message.
Did it confirm to launch missiles and, subsequently, cause the nuclear holocaust or was it a message saying to stand down? A captain and his XO disagree, and a mutiny soon follows. The captain and XO are played by Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, respectively, which is precisely what makes this movie work: watching these two acting heavyweights square off against each other, it is captivating.
But not to be outdone the performances given by the supporting cast, namely Viggo Mortensen and James Gandolfini; they are also very good. Tony Scott's direction continues to impress me. You don't need to know anything about submarines for this one to get your pulse pumping.
