Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Andrew O — 09 Nov 2015
Lavish & melodramatic gothic horror which while short on scares is very entertaining.
American socialite Edith Cushing is running away from a family tragedy. She marries Thomas Sharpe, a mysterious stranger. She comes to live with him and his sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe in England. But all is not as it seems at Sharpe's family home Crimson Peak.
The films art direction is the real star of the show, the house is a character of its own with bleeding walls (thanks to red clay the house is built on) and dark corridors.
The plot is slight and the twists are obvious from the get go but the final reel really kicks into gear and features some brutal violence and gore horror fans will welcome.
This is not one of the Directors best works, his Spanish films are superior but this is unmistakably a Guillermo Del Toro film. For some that is high praise enough.
