Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Greg B — 14 Dec 2015
Average at best. There are a few problems with Crimson Peak, one is that there are no surprises. You basically see everything that's coming a mile away. There's no great twist, and no moments where you're find yourself saying "OMG, I didn't see that coming!" Everything in this movie is just obvious.
The movie never really lives up to any expectations of fright, or wonder that you hope you might get from it. I kept expecting some great reveal that never came. The other thing that bothered me is the over use of obvious, cartoony CGI.
The ghosts in this movie never look real. I've seen better looking ghosts in the days of practical FX. Just because you can use CGI doesn't mean you should! Basically watching this movie is like just watching a story unfold, where you're neither surprised, thrilled, frightened, nor engaged.
you're just riding it out until it';s obvious conclusion.
