Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Peter F — 16 Mar 2018
It's been nearly a decade since Pan's Labyrinth was released, and we've all been eager to see del Toro return to the gothic horror of his one masterpiece. Crimson Peak is that, but while it may display some of the director's best talents, it's also unfathomably slight.
For starters the film's story isn't anything special, and actually drags for most of its running time. This ennui causes a rather distancing relationship between the audience and the characters, especially as the film's start is rather bland.
It does pick up as it goes along though, the designs and lighting put it above other horror films, and del Toro makes effective use of the film's slow-burn to give an exciting climax. It's a fairly minor work for his filmography, but it makes for a fine Halloween movie.
..a rainy Halloween though.
