Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Wayne N — 11 Feb 2016
I'm beginning to see that the tomatometer and I often disagree.
Ok, so the movie: Crimson Peak was fraught with senseless plot additions that never pan out. We find out early that Edith can see ghosts.... but they never just pop up and tell her what she needs to know. Ghosts are evidently all very dramatic. They like to walk back and forth in the hall a few times before simply saying what they came to say. She sees terrifying images, that chase her, but as long as 30 or seconds pass, she seems to forget all about them.
How much money does it take to fix the roof? Thomas and Lucille have went through several women's fortunes but can't fix the roof? The house is sinking into the mud (which we see on the first floor) but it also has a basement? That makes no sense. Is the mud above the basement? I guess it doesn't matter since the mud is gone for the rest of the movie.
Thomas is some kind of inventor? They have went through enough money to fix their home ten times, heck they could have stayed at Lucille's place instead of coming back to the Sharpe home. The plot makes no sense. The characters are not clear-cut. Is Lucille evil? Is Thomas good? How does Dr. Alan fit in? Edith clearly didn't want to be with him in the beginning, does he think saving her will "oblige" her to be with him? Why is Edith so dense? Why was there so much emphasis on her novel only to see it burned? The movie was beautifully shot, the sets are fantastic, Tom Hiddleston's acting is great (though his part is fuzzy) but the individual ingredients just don't make an appetizing dish.
