Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Leon B — 06 Mar 2016
Review:
I was expecting this movie to be about sophisticated, blood sucking vampires but it just turned out to be about a twisted brother and sister, who would do anything to get money to save there mansion and family business. Personally I found the pace of the movie quite slow and the gullible young woman, Edith (Mia Wasikowska) was extremely easy pickings for the creepy but seductive Thomas (Tom Hiddleston). His weird sister, Lucille (Jessica Chastain), was weird from the beginning of the film, so I wasn't surprised when she turned out to be a total psycho but the reoccurring ghosts that were popping in and out of the film, didn't really lead to anything. Also, what was going on with the dog? I thought that it was going to play an important part, when the story unfolds but that didn't go anywhere either. You can work out where the film is going, right from the beginning but with that aside, the performances from Hiddleston and Chastain were great. Wasikowska's performance was pretty average, mainly because she didn't think that anything suspect was happening until she opened the letters and listened to the records but Dr. Alan McMichael (Charlie Hunnam) and her father Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver), could smell trouble as soon as Thomas entered the room. Anyway, it's not a bad movie, for a period drama but I personally was expecting more. Average!
Round-Up:
Tom Hiddleston, 35, has become a bit of a screen icon since his great performance in Thor and the Avengers franchise, so I'm not surprised that this movie made a healthy profit at the box office. He's rumoured to star in the next Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok, as Loki, and he's currently starring in the hit series, the Night Manager which has been getting some great reviews. He is definitely a unique actor who can tell a story through his eyes and emotions, so he was the perfect choice for this movie. When I saw that this movie was being directed by Guillermo del Toro, 51, my expectations were very high, because of his enormous attention to detail and unique storytelling methods. I wasn't that impressed with Pacific Rim but I really enjoyed the Hellboy franchise, Mimic and Pan's Labyrinth. After departing from the Hobbit project, even though he spent month's working on pre-production and created a whole story board, he sadly had to hand the project back to Peter Jackson because MGM went bankrupt. Anyway, although this is a watchable movie it's not one that I can watch time and time again. .
Budget: $55million.
Worldwide Gross: $75million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their drama/fantasy/horrors starring Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain, Jim Beaver, Burn Gorman and Leslie Hope. 4/10.
