Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Nik G — 19 Jul 2016
What a crushing disappointment. It's hard to get excited about a movie where the lead actors either sound utterly disinterested (Hiddleston) or glibly befuddled (Wasikowska) throughout. Weirdly, De Toro manages to an impressive location and promising concept and make something utterly vacuous and, shockingly, visually dull.
The themes of sex, death and decay are so gloomily applied to a poorly conceived set of plot contrivances as to make you question the director's previous genius. Watch Pan's Labyrinth and wash away the crimson doubt.
