Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Cloverallovermd — 21 Nov 2015
I had really high hopes for this movie. I genuinely wanted to love it because it's so rare that haunting movies come out. There are horror movies that imply hauntings, but they often depend greatly on gore. This one depended on its backgrounds.
This movie started out very promising. The scene and lines were rich enough to keep me looking and listening closely...Then that fool offered to teach everyone how to do the waltz and demonstrated the foxtrot. Was this an accident or intentional mistake in the script? I don't understand why her father didn't come back to tell her who killed him or the ghost saying, "His blood will be on your hands" if she didn't leave.
The backdrop was lovely in every scene. Even the tattered mansion had a mystery that made you want to look around for yourself. A lot of detail was given to setting scenes and making things move around the characters. I actually think the spirits were demonstrated perfectly, with odd subhuman shapes and sounds. I enjoyed watching the settings more than the characters. I did really like the sister's dark character. You don't see that often.
I can see why people would not like the movie, being that it took two hours to confirm what we knew in the first 20 minutes. The movie hinted to us that the doctor would discuss ghosts with the girl. It hinted that the siblings were aware of the spirits in their home. It showed smoke images of ghosts, but short detail about important spirits that revealed themselves as gore. There was very little anticipation other than confirming the plot for 75% of the movie. If it weren't for the scene setup, I probably wouldn't have watched the whole movie.
Now that it's over, my only fear is that there will be a part two with the girl having been impregnated when she slept with brother dearest. Then I'd have to watch that too.
