Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Jay O — 07 Nov 2015
The set is probably the most 'engaging' part of this film as it did look very eccentric. The rest of the film, however, was slow to start, tediously slow to build and then, thankfully, quick to end. The supernatural elements looked like they had been ripped out of a sci-fi film and pasted on top of a period film which took away any chance of them being at all frightening. The performances weren't terrible but didn't do enough to redeem the slow pace of the film which, despite the quickened end, never seemed to reach any kind of 'peak'. The plot 'twists' were apparent ages before their reveal so there was very little in the way of suspense.
I was surprised by the positive reviews as I left feeling very underwhelmed.
