Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Tatsuhito K — 20 Oct 2016
As Guillermo said in many occasions, this is not a ghost movie. It's a Gothic romance film with ghosts in it, so it might be dull for those who are looking for some generic scares or some bloodbath you get from horror films these days.
It is not a masterpiece; the story is slight and there isn't much depth to its characters either. But for what it is, I had an immensely fun time watching Crimson Peak. Loved the combination of a delightfully creepy vibe and lavishing visuals (the production design and cinematography are absolutely magnificent.
And the ghosts...They are freaky in the best way possible). Tom Hiddleston was great and Jessica Chastain, despite her terrible British accent, was effectively chilling. It was a little too violent for my taste, but other than that this is a well-crafted, atmospheric Gothic romance.
Crimson Peak might be forgettable for some, but it showcases Del Toro's brilliant knack for stunning visuals.
