Review of Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) by Corey C — 12 Aug 2008
This is the one Woody Allen film that is able to totally separate the "dramatic Allen" and the "comedic Allen," yet still sucessfully create a cohearent and excellent movie. Not only is it troubling and genuinly funny but it does raise quiestions about good vs.
evil, right and wrong, that makes a viewer think without riding the point into the ground. It's almost in the same vein of a "morality play" but Allen has a lot of fun turning that particular genre on it's head.
What is left is a funny yet dour portrait of two men who are the victims of moral and social norms, a scary coincidence given what was to come in Allen's personal life.
