Review of Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) by James M — 14 Oct 2008
"Nice guys finish last" should be the tagline for the film. They truly do in this film. Woody Allen and Martin Landau are perfect in their roles. Landau really acts like he is hurt and disturbed at the things he's done but is he really or is it just the natural reaction that he thinks he should have? I feel as is if he almost forgives himself for committing this horrible act by recognizing that it was horrible.
That shit doesn't cut it. Allen's secondary but equally interesting story involving him and his love life or lackthereof was heartbreaking. His face when he sees the girl he fell for with the guy he despises really,as I said earlier, broke my heart.
This is not an entirely bleak film until you think about it afterwards. I found myself thinking about Anjelica Houston's character and the horrible cards she was dealt. It's wonderful to see that Allen can handle such big issues like morality and faith and so well at that.
