One of Bergman's most depressing and moving works in a career filled with depressing and moving works. Beautifully shot by long-time collaborator and master cinematographer Sven Nykvist and featuring some of Bergman's greatest actresses giving their greatest performances (especially the always wonderful Harriet Andersson), this is Bergman near his very peak and remains an extremely resonant work to this day.
