Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Adam P — 10 Dec 2007
Cries and Whispers exists inside a vacuum, holding its characters hostage to their guilt, self-hatred, and inability to empathize. But this is not to dismiss the film as nihilistic--for all its physical and psychological torment, it never loses a solid center of grace and transcendence.
Bergman's characters must "work out [their] own salvation with fear and trembling"--the drama arises from whether they can or not.
