Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Yana P — 14 Mar 2008
How the hell can Bergman cram all this thematic weight into 91 minutes?
The film is devastating and, frankly, terrifying. Seriously; this is far more horrifying than any dozen horror pictures I can think of. I can't shake Nykvist's cinematography from my mind.
Is belief in some god and/or an afterlife a prerequisite for happiness and love in the face of a cruel, painful world? Man, I hope not.
I was told the ending was optimistic. We'll have to agree to disagree; there's nothing optimistic about reminding us that happiness exists, yes, but it's fleeting and we're all gonna wind up like Agnes one day, but probably without her faith. And most likely without an Anna by our side.
