Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Hario P — 19 Apr 2008
A true masterpiece of cinema. Brilliant and beautiful.
The film was oozing with symbols, hard questions and emotions. Piece by piece it would probably sound something like: the bells, the red colors(makes it seem that blood is spilled in the environment these sisters live in), the dresses, the cinematography(one of the best if not the best i've seen on film, makes this the most visually stunning film i've recently watched), and the 4 magnificent actresses(excellent acting across the board, no exceptions).
A deeply haunting movie experience. Stirring, disturbing and unnerving. Grim, dark, and eerie. I remembered I had my hands clutched up my head a couple of times while thinking out loud "Jesus Christ". I had my jaws drop a couple of times, especially that Karin scene. All the wails and cries only added to my unnerving experience. The whispers between scene cuts added creepiness. This was like a ghost story, only it's not. Anna's dream sequence had me shouting inside, probably from fear and disbelief.
Really, everybody should watch this movie.
