Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Cassandra M — 08 Dec 2009
Out of all of Ingmar Bergman's canon, this may rank as one of his most challenging and divisive pieces (up there with Persona). The pain of Agnes in this film is the very pain of humanity; the master of cinema uses the color red to symbolize the soul and its varying internal discrepencies as he sees it through the sisters.
This will shock, alienate, and perturb, and though it isn't my favorite of Bergman's work, its haunting beauty and vivid color (RED, like you've never seen it before) will stick with you for a long time.
