Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Salma D — 14 Oct 2010
I hadn't watched this masterpiece in a while, but I finally did, and boy, was I blown away by it- this is probably going to be my favorite Bergman picture. It has phenomenal direction, cinematography and art direction.
Few films are this emotionally painful, this emotionally intense and this emotionally uncompromising. It's a great film, and I think James Bernadelli put it right- in order to see why this is such a great film, it has to be experienced, not watched.
Aside from overtones that are a bit overbearing and the obvious symbolism (maybe this was intended) this is one of European cinema's greatest achievements.
