Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Davey M — 13 Jun 2012
It gets pretty bleak and dire and depressive and existentially terrified even for Ingmar Bergman (which, in some ways, makes it The Ultimate Ingmar Bergman Film, even if it's not my favorite). There's also more red here than in a Michael Powell movie.
Hard to watch at times--Bergman questions God and human relations and the meaning of anything and the black hopelessness of death through a series of literal whispers and sobbing cries of anguish--but it's also a perfect piece of stark cinematic expression, and riveting in the way Bergman's films are almost always riveting.
