Review of Creep (2014) by Brett B — 14 Sep 2015
CREEP is a film that kind of dares you the guess where it's going to go next. At the outset, we of course know - based on the title - that something at least off-kilter is probably going to take place at some point, but the filmmakers do a fantastic job of constantly surprising.
It starts as something of an offbeat comedy before very gradually transitioning into something much weirder, darker, and more sinister. Compared to most other "found footage" films, the narrative structure is very interesting, and the plot takes some wholly unexpected turns.
As the titular creep, Duplass is fantastic, at times awkward, hilarious, and chilling. There are some cheap jump scares to be found, but they're mostly harmless and are executed quite well (read: they got me to jump), but it's the film's second half where things begin to get truly unnerving, complete with some genuinely eerie sequences.
I hesitate to get into specifics, because - while it doesn't have what one would conventionally call a "twist" - it is a movie that should be experienced knowing as little about it as possible.
Suffice to say, I enjoyed it a great deal, was actually on edge for much of it, and think it's a pretty fresh entry in what many deem to be a stale subgenre/style.
