Review of Creep (2014) by Kenny N — 08 Jan 2016
He's a creep alright. I want to rate it higher, because it's getting critical hosannahs, but there's one major factor that prevents me from praising it as highly as others: Patrick Brice as Aaron.
Skilled director, skilled writer, but not a very good actor. There's a reason (besides actually directing the film) that he's off camera for most of the running time. He just simply doesn't have the personality or expressiveness to convince us he's frightened, angry, anything.
Flat, robotic voice, face permanently set at "confused" mode...he's supposed to be the eyes and ears of the audience, and he's just simply not up to the job. As for Mark Duplass, who plays our villain.
..something about him made me not trust him immediately. (His character I mean. I'm sure Mark Duplass is a lovely, friendly person. At least I hope so.) So it's no surprise when he begins terrorizing our hero.
But he does a fantastic job at it. As unconvincing as Patrick Brice was as the hero, Duplass sure made me feel creepy and unsettled as the villain. I hope he goes far. As for Brice, this was well directed, written, and acted (for Mark Duplass) but he should truly stay behind the camera.
3 stars seem to be good enough.
