Review of Creed II (2018) by Jose Miguel G — 04 Jan 2019
Creed 2 takes the groundwork laid by the first as well as the Rocky films that preceded them both and seeks to build upon it. It is largely successful in doing so continuing Adonis Creeds character arc set in motion from the first film as his life seems to be coming together in all the ways he wants the past continues to haunt him.
This film largely deals with him struggling to come to terms with this sense of expectation he has placed on himself. Michael B Jordan does an excellent job once again of portraying the earnest vulnerability of Creed which makes his moments of raw power in the boxing ring that much more effective.
Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson return to do most of the heavy lifting in supporting roles and quite excellently at that. This is a deeply personal story more akin to the first Creed and the first Rocky than the ridiculous spectacle of the sequels despite the story connections.
Boxing films are a dime a dozen but this stands among the best in the genre.
