Review of Creed (2015) by Stuart M — 10 Feb 2016
A good continuation of the Rocky series that sees Stallone starring in a supporting role as a new hero takes the spotlight. I admire the film for its willingness to invert the normal approach. Instead of a poor but plucky none-too-intelligent working class underdog we get an intelligent and wealthy son of a famous father who has to rise above his privileged upbringing to establish himself as a boxing champ.
That it works at all is a testament to the filmmakers and the clever decision to make a large part of his struggle be to prove that he's more than just his father's name. The new kid is very good in the part, even if I miss Stallone's working class pluckiness.
Stallone himself gives his best work in years and does so in such a manner that you never questioned that he is truly an older version of the Rocky Balboa we saw in '79. Every note with him is pitch perfect.
