Review of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) by Todd S — 18 Sep 2005
This one is considered a classic by most genre fans. I include myself in that crowd. The plot is fairly simple but there is no fault in that. Simplicity works, and at the time it was pretty original. The effects, especially the creature suit, are very good. It was designed well and let the man wearing it remain under water for long shots. Yet it is not an obvious rubber suit and there is no hump back that would be a tell tale sign of air tanks under the suit. There were none..
As I understand it, the suit was designed with a layer or pocket of air that allowed the person in the suit to breath underwater for long shots before having to surface to refill. The system, as I mentioned, allowed the suit to look realistic and allowed the wearer to swim gracefully and naturally with no bulky air tanks to misshape the suit..
The music does well to fit the eerie atmosphere that is achieved in the film. The actors may be dated, 1950s style actors, but no one goes over the top..
