Review of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) by Bob L — 27 Jun 2010
Creature feature from the 50's actually set the bar for many of the beastie movies shot today. So many shots you can say- "Hey- didn't they use that shot in Jaws?" "...wasn't it done like that in Predator?" etc.
Nice pre-Green ecology thing going on, with surprisingly little blue screen or studio sets, mainly on location which must've been ambitious considering 50's budgets. Also interesting; it was one of the first 3-d movies, and didn't rely on the "oooh, look what's coming out at you" gimmick, which is why it works in 2d.
Some poor acting in this, but it's still a charming little monster movie after 50 something years. The soundtrack is an interesting mish mash of about 3 composers, each with their own sound (one being Henry Mancini), but by giving them limited themes they cut together smoother than expected.
Not a great movie, but an essential for movie nerds.
