Review of Creation (2009) by Alex B — 21 Jan 2010
I went to an early screening of this film starring Paul Beattany as Charles Darwin and Jennifer Connely as his wife Emma. Both give amazing performances in this film. It is about Darwin's emotional Journey and how he came to write 'The Origin of Species' one of the most important books of our time.
The film itself is a slow paced and I wish they had explored more of Darwin's findings. I wanted to get inside of his head. This is not that film. A huge chunk of it focuses on Darwin?s relationship with his daughter Annie and Wife Emma.
How his deep depression into almost insanity broke his faith even more in God and the opposite happened to his wife Emma. There was a panel discussion after the movie with Director Jon Amiel, a preist and Darwin's own descendant Randall Darwin.
It was quite a treat. They emphasized that there is no hateful agenda in the film against religion in anyway. In fact, Darwin was not opposed to religion of God. Being a man of science, he just wanted facts and evidence.
In the end it is his wife Emma who ultimately opens up to his ideas and that is just the point of the film. To have an open mind and not just to blindly follow what you are taught. To have faith, but explore, be open to new ideas, to question and come to your own conclusion of to what the truth is.
Any movie that opens up these ideas to the audience is well appreciated in my book. It is interesting to see that this month two movies about faith are opening up but are of complete different origin.
'Creation' and 'The Book of Eli'. See them for yourself and come to your own conclusion.
